Hi there -
I am new to this tribe, and I thought I'd post an introduction and a question to start things off here.
First off, I'm Ayperi, and I'm a bellydancer in Madison, WI. I'm the contact person and manager for the act "Weno Gypsies," which is a Middle Eastern dance, music, history, fire dance, fantasy, and comedy act.
We performed at the Bristol Renaissance Faire (Kenosha, WI) last summer, the Camelot Medeval Festival (WI) in the fall, and the Janesville Renaissance Faire (WI) this spring. We are very happy and excited to be taking our act to Bristol again this year, but this year, rather than doing stage performances, like we have been for the past three faires, we were asked to do street performances.
Does any one have any advice for how to convert a stage act to the street? Any advice for street performers as to how to keep one's energy up while performing so much?
Thanks!!!
- Ayperi

Re: Newbie Intro & Question about street performing
Tue, June 3, 2008 - 11:17 AMArdent busker at your service.
As for energy, I pull it from my audience. Every new face has new energy, and you just feed on that. Make sure you bring lots of water. I incorperate drinking water into my act (Think deep backbend) but I don't know if you could do that as a belly dancer. Keep hydrated, because that will always drain your physical energy quickly.
Unfortunatly, dance is probably the one form of busking that I've never really done, so I don't know if there are any special things that I should tell you.
Learn to talk to and control smaller audiences who can and WILL intrude your stage space. There is no longer a "line" between you and the audience, unless you the performer create it.
And be prepared to outrun the police (this doens't happen *too* often)
Check out Busker Central (google it!!!)
Good luck! -

Re: Newbie Intro & Question about street performing
Tue, June 3, 2008 - 2:54 PMHi Contessa! Haven't talked to you in a while.
I am almost positive OP means the FAIRE street, which is legal. She's not busking, she's going to be part of a Renaissance Faire cast. I certainly hope that rennies don't have to run from the cops! (Shhh. Yes I go to RPFS. We're not talking about THAT.) -

Tue, June 3, 2008 - 4:18 PMOh my GOD I feel like an idiot.
My reading comprehension scores wre my lowest on my SAT's.
It's obvious they haven't gotten any better since then.
Someone just delete that damned post. -

Thu, June 5, 2008 - 8:40 AMHi Contessa -
Thank you so much for the ideas! Actually, your idea is a great one about out running the police - and we're incorporating something like that into our act as "illegal Gypsies" or something like that.
Thanks! :)
