If you haven't seen the message being forwarded around from Gerald, here it is. Looks like we're back to having only one Northern faire again.

Dear Guildmasters, Directors, Performers,
As you have been aware, the fate of our Northern Faire has been uncertain. I am sad to announce that we are, indeed, closing the Northern Renaissance Pleasure Faire. Below is a letter from our management detailing the situation. Please know that Southern Faire will go on as planned, and that I am continuing as Entertainment Director. I thank everyone involved in creating our entertainment. You can be proud of the fine job you have done and proud of the effort you exerted to make this Faire a success. The memories of Northern Faire, including the times we shared, certainly will live on in my heart. I am looking forward to our next meeting. I apologize for the lack of a complete e-mail list. Please forward this message to all concerned parties.

Dear Faire Family,
As you are aware, we have been fighting a losing battle over the last few years with attendance and loss of income with the Northern Renaissance Pleasure Faire. We have had a steady decline in attendance since 1991 (with the exception of 1994, our first year of "Farewell to Black Point").
There is no one factor that we can isolate which has contributed to the failing of the show. The decline began during the Patterson's administration and has continued through a series of General Managers who have been unable to stop th e hemorrhaging of revenues at this event.
No ad campaign nor marketing schedule, including Phyllis Patterson's legendary marketing skills, was able to deter the decline. Our attendance failed long before we moved from our home in Blackpoint and has suffered greatly while we tried to find a permanent home.
Since 1994 we have looked at over 200 sites and have spent over $500,000 in an attempt to find a home for our Faire. Not only has a property been impossible to find, the one exception (American Canyon) proved too costly to make workable and the California environment regulations work against any sincere efforts to create a business which by all accounts, "lays lightly on the soil".
The Northern Faire has lost $900,061 in revenues during the years 1999-2003. Our attendance has declined 62% since 1991. The losses incurred by the Northern Faire have placed a continual drain on our Southern, Chicago and New York Faires, which are healthy shows and consistently create a profit. It is unfair for these healthy shows to bear the burden on Northern's losses.
It, therefore, is which great sadness that we announce that we are closing the Northern Renaissance Pleasure Faire.
We must ask that you remove all of your personal possessions from the site by November 2nd, 2003.
As performers and entertainers the show has rested on your shoulders for many, many seasons. Please know that this failure does not reflect upon the amazing grace that you have given the show. We are all so appreciative of the energy and level of entertainment that you have contributed.
The show sparkled brightly this season and it is bittersweet that even though we have never looked or perform ed better, this has become our final Huzzah. We thank all of you for your continued support through all these past years. For as long as the show lives in our memories, it shall never fade away.

Re: Farewell to REC's Northern Faire
Tue, October 21, 2003 - 2:16 PMMaybe if they would of fired Shannon Wood years ago they would've had a decent marketing department to get a new audience.
Also, with the way they treated the workers worse and worse each year the old faithfuls have found other faires to work anyways. Looks like I'll have to find a new job to keep myself in the loop in Novato next year.

Re: Farewell to REC's Northern Faire
Tue, October 21, 2003 - 2:47 PMNot really a surprise. Folks have known that RPFN has been bleeding to death for years now. The loss of black point just proved to be irreplaceable. The only real surprise here is how long it took.
What a damned loss. -

Re: Farewell to REC's Northern Faire
Sun, November 2, 2003 - 9:01 PMYes. But it will be interesting to see if the Patterson faire picks up more business from this next year. -
-
Re: Farewell to REC's Northern Faire
Fri, November 14, 2003 - 12:21 PMThe booth owners are getting together and are going to own the Faire as a group. As Northern was the first Ren. faire, it will also be the first that is participant owned.
-
Re: Farewell to REC's Northern Faire
Tue, January 27, 2004 - 7:43 AMthe Patterson faire won't be ale to grow much since they have a cap on how many patrons that can visit in a day
unless they move to a new location

Re: Farewell to REC's Northern Faire
Tue, February 3, 2004 - 5:14 PMPatterson has the option to renegotiate in two years.
So far there is little word other than rumor on the booth owner/guild mission success, but outlook is good. Dates have been posted for an "interim northern" but many of the performers are too expensive, so may not be able to perform at the new northern until it gets on its feet.
Have you heard the no more southern after this year rumor also? -

Re: Farewell to REC's Northern Faire
Tue, February 3, 2004 - 6:03 PMWhat no more southern rumor??? -

Re: Farewell to REC's Northern Faire
Wed, February 4, 2004 - 10:58 AMIt's just a rumour. Southern is flourishing. It will be interesting to see the booth owners pick up Northern...it's such a pretty spot. Too bad I didn't ever see Blackpoint. When I lived up here the first time, back in '94 I tried to go as a patron, and they wouldn't let my friends and I in...they said they were sold out! So, after that, I never had such a good feeling about it. I moved to San Diego after that and never got a chance to see the old site... -

Re: Farewell to REC's Northern Faire
Wed, February 4, 2004 - 12:50 PMI drove past the site the other week. For those of us who called that site home, it's the saddest thing in the world to see the place overrun as a golf course. But I was pleasantly surprised to see that the majority of the golf course is where the parking lot used to be, and the club house is where cardiac hill used to be. It appears that most of the site itself is probably still intact. One of these days I'm going to drive up there and do some exploring. I want to know if caravancery grove is still standing. -

Re: Farewell to REC's Northern Faire
Thu, February 5, 2004 - 12:45 AMI dunno-- I think it's wretched and humerous at the same time that they named the place "Renaissance"... and it's amazing how much of the hillside was graded down. It's not nearly as intact as you think. Join me in the one-fingered salute to the golf course? -
-
Re: Farewell to REC's Northern Faire
Thu, February 5, 2004 - 1:20 AMThey named it WHAT?!?
Those sons of bloated whores... -
-
Re: Farewell to REC's Northern Faire
Thu, February 5, 2004 - 1:34 AMTHat seems somehow very, very wrong...Renaissance Golf Course? How Gay...sounds like their should be little castles and flags and put-put wind mills, but that would be even more of a slap, wouldn't it? -
-
Re: Farewell to REC's Northern Faire
Thu, February 5, 2004 - 1:41 AMOr better yet, a few dozen of us out there in kilts, using their pretty little golf course as a shintee field. Now that would be fun! -
-
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Farewell to REC's Northern Faire
Thu, February 5, 2004 - 9:40 AMThe one thing I hate is golf courses, and to destroy a beuatiful place as any Faire to put one up makes me livid!! Chicago joins your salute!!! -

Re: Farewell to REC's Northern Faire
Thu, February 5, 2004 - 11:15 AMMaybe it was whomever's who built the thing homage to the Ren Faire, in some wierd and twisted way, maybe they thought they were being nice...dorks...

Re: Farewell to REC's Northern Faire
Mon, February 9, 2004 - 5:41 PMNo, they had a 20 yr contract for the place in Devore. They were supposedly building permanent structres and everything. I think the only way they could get out of it is if they went out of business. -
-
Re: Farewell to REC's Northern Faire
Tue, February 10, 2004 - 4:06 PMDevore's where Southern faire is; I guess the golf course is on Northern's old site. -
-
Re: Farewell to REC's Northern Faire
Tue, February 10, 2004 - 6:09 PMYup and it breaks my heart everytime I drive by it(tear)....There were allot of good times to be had at that site ..both day and night!

Tue, April 8, 2008 - 1:49 PMI stumbled on this thread in a search and found it a funny read after so much has changed in just these few years!
Glad to see that Northern was saved! -
