Pittsburgh Faire? Anyone gone?

topic posted Fri, April 11, 2008 - 11:16 AM by  Allison
I have an opportunity to go out for the run of Pittsburgh Faire, but I'd like to know about the faire environment out there before agreeing to spend that long away from home. What's it like, in your experience? How are the patrons and actors? Is there camping? After hours fun? Is everyone crazy and prude?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Assuming you're talking about: www.pittsburgfaire.com/eatnsleep.asp there are some things to bear in mind:

    1. It's an open, no charge faire. So you get all manner of folk wandering through. Which is pretty awesome.
    2. Have a secure location to stow your gear and make sure you lock it.
    3. It is very windy in the mornings. So some garb is harder to prep than others. I wear a kilt and hand pleating it is a major pain.
    4. It's also windy as hell at night. Lots of folks get tent kisses at night. You know, when your tent folds over from the wind and the 'top' of it slaps you in face - tent kisses.
    5. While it hasn't happened in my recent memory, the townies have been known to throw eggs and fire paint balls at the tents.

Due to issues 2-5, I usually rent a hotel room for that weekend to be honest. Otherwise, the battle pageant is good, the Trolls are usually there doing their gig by the bridge and the atmosphere is pretty festive. Oh, and I think there's a pool and showers on site too.

The Pittsburgh PA faire is a smaller faire, but I really enjoyed it.

Most of the faire runs on a hill, so it is not a good faire for those with mobility concerns... The areas that are on level ground are completely without trees. So either your walking the hill in the shade, or on more or less even ground without shade.

The people were all nice, while I had no direct contact with him, I've heard the guy in charge of the vendors can be a bit of a hard-ass, but other than that, it is a good smaller faire.

If you have any more specific questions, let me know.
