anyone care to share what the food is like? what is goin on with after hours, any one even able to do a dinner thing for Participants and staff?
I would love ot be involved with faire again and bring good cooking there, not to say anything bad of current vendors.

It wil hep her ratings muchly if people buy it in the first couple days or pre-order from Amazon.

Foo is all kinds of awesome and I fully expect her book to be. It's already got a starred Publisher's Weekly review. For those of you who are sticklers for historical accuracy, let it be known that (as an archeologist and person who likes things just so) Foo is too. And bring the witty banter. She is publishing under the name and persona of Gail Carriger.

"Soulless" is due on the shelves in 6 days, Amazon ships in 4 (there is a kindle edition), and a few brick & mortars around the world have already pipped the post! It helps her rankings muchly the more people pre-order on Amazon or who buy the book on the first day- so if you're thinking about it, don't wait!
Alexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations. First, she has no soul. Second, she's a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead. Third, she is being rudely attacked by a vampire to whom she has not been properly introduced!

Where to go from there? From bad to worse apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire, and the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate. With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia responsible.

Can she figure out what is actually happening to London's high society? Will her soulless ability to negate supernatural powers prove useful or just plain embarrassing? Who is the real enemy, and do they have treacle tart?

(Pedersen’s Mill, 39115 Rim of the World Dr., Fawnskin, CA. For more information and ticket prices, go to http://www.fawnskinvictorian.com/, or 1-800-4BigBear.)

If you've only ever seen the Belles perform at Renaissance events, you're in for quite a different treat. We’ll be tartin’ it up in our corsets and bloomers, and serenading you with songs from the period as well as some of our regular crowd-pleasing favorites. You'll get to meet our newest sisters - Mercy, Morganna, and Myrtle, and our good friends the Sportive Tricks will be performing too!

Hosted in Fawnskin, the event will showcase the entire 19th century, including Victoriana, pioneers, the Wild West, old miners, loggers, and the American civil war. Come prepared to encounter literary characters and authors, historical figures, shoot outs in the streets, arrests and judgments from the "hangin' judge." There will be period entertainment and games, and a children's area. The Loggers Jubilee will be open to the general public, but experienced loggers are needed. There will be trophies, cash prizes, and even a saw given away!

. . . and I haven't been to Southern since it was in Devore,

but

In my never-to-be-humble opinion, the audience is what matters. The SCA has no audience. They do their events for themselves. That's all well and good, but it means they don't have to take the audience into account. SCA and ren faires are different animals.

Ren faires are about entertaining a crowd that pays admission & buys goods which support the event. Among other things, I play music at the faires. With the exception of Greensleeves & some madrigals, NONE of the music at faires are period. Even if the lyrics are from that time, the music wasn't recorded until a century later at the earliest. We present an image to take people out of the present & give them a feeling of the past. It's impossible to dot every "i" and cross every "t". The information just isn't there. Even in instances where it is, it's not always desirable. We are not presenting a dry history lesson, we're presenting a renaissance THEMED entertainment.

That being said, the history snobs keep us honest.

The renaissance was a fascinating time in history, with dynamic changes going on in the arts, sciences & world culture. That's why it took off as a theme for an entertainment genre in the first place. There's plenty to draw from that is interesting, entertaining and instructive about the period. It's the snobs that keep us from being a "tie die fair" - from going off the deep end. There was an episode of Futurama where they went to a year 2000 fair. Wild west cowboys on rocket horses were going on a brontosaurus round up. Many renaissance fairs have become just that. Those fairs are copies of LHC's original Renaissance Pleasure Faire. They are what they are, but the audience that grew up on the original is more sophisticated than that, and they crave an escape from the troubles of this modern time. I remember that painful ad campaign that had print ads saying "The man show began in the 16th century", and the radio spots that had the surfer dude saying, "There's beer, & boobs & babes!". They played to a lowest common denominator that wasn't the California audience & wondered why the attendance kept dropping & eventually bailed on Northern, saying there was no audience. Then the inmates took over the asylum, and Northern is still going strong. What did we know that REC didn't? We knew our audience, and they're what matters. They are our life's blood. THEY are the ones we have to entertain.

If we doggedly cling to the history, the entertainment is lame.. If we abandon it entirely, the illusion of the past and the blessed escapism our audience seeks is lost, and again, the entertainment is lame. The real trick is straddling the line. Keeping things entertaining to modern sensibilities, while keeping the illusion of the past alive. We have the ability to do that - to lead as we once did in this genre. We're the original. We can look to our own history to make the Renaissance Faire the spectacular entertainment that inspired hundreds of copies. Or we can try to copy those copies.

Each copy loses a little more of what was special in the first place - in my never-to-be-humble opinion.

As people start making clothes for the new faire season, a note about skirts and waistlines. Is there a gap between your bodice and your skirt? Shirt or chemise showing between?

Currently, most modern clothes have pants and skirts that sit below the natural waistline. The natural waistline is usually the narrowest/smallest part of your waist. A skirt waistband sitting at the natural waistline would be above your belly button. Renaissance skirts should be at the natural waistline.

Then when a simple bodice is laced up, the bottom edge of the bodice will be where your waistband ends and skirt begins.

So, remember when making your skirts to make the waistband higher up than you'd normally wear your jeans or mundane skirts. Hope this helps.

I would greatly appreciate being pointed in the direction of appropriate patterns and fabric types. I know to avoid obviously modern prints and super bright colours, but I'm looking for appropriate brocades and coarsely woven cottons for skirts and undergarments. What types of silks should I be looking for, since I want to make my other half a silk shirt?

Hey, all! I'm very excited to announce that the next Belles of Bedlam performance is going to be in just a few short days! We've done faires for the Big Bear Valley Renaissance society before, but this year they're excited to present their very first Victorian Faire! This coming Saturday and Sunday, July 5th & 6th, join the Belles, Sportive Tricks, and a wide variety of other exciting shows and entertainments!

Here is a little more info:

The Big Bear Valley Renaissance Society, Inc. is delighted to announce our first Victorian Festival on July 5th and 6th, 2008, at our permanent site on the north shore of Big Bear Lake!

Hosted in the lovely little town of Fawnskin, the Victorian Festival is a day in Charles Dickens London: a city filled with lively and colorful characters from both literature and history. Come join us for an adventure in this elegant era with hundreds of costumed players in music halls, pubs and dance parties. Explore our winding lanes, finding trinkets and treasures while surrounded by enticing aromas of hearty foods and the joyous sound of music in the air.

Some of the activities will include a Victorian Tea, Tea with the Queen, and readings by Charles Dickens, Edgar Allan Poe, Mark Twain, and other literary artists of the 19th century. We will have demonstrations of the Gatling gun, cannon, and a battle of the Queen's Royal Army! Entertainment, such as the always exciting (and often titillating) Belles of Bedlam, will also be provided on five stages throughout the day. And, for the younger set, we will have the children's craft & game area.

While not all visitors come in costume, a great many do. The highlight of the event, the Grand Masque Ball under the stars on Saturday night, is a costumed affair, although a non-costumed gallery is available, if you would like to witness the glamorous spectacle.

Hope to see you there!

What was my concern at faire? Having fun and making money for my booth. While our booth was different… and we got into the BFA etc… most do not.. other than the few words need to sell their wares… Good Day to you mistress etc.
In GENERAL, as a booth worker.. you really didn’t know who the “Characters” were at faire.. you didn’t know the details.. you knew The Queen obviously.. and maybe one or two other people.. who for some strange reason you happened to either be friends with or interacted with because they knew someone you knew. For instance… Booth workers.. had NO clue about the elections at southern this year. I would bet you money.. that unless someone in axe throw.. happened to know Jenny personally.. or knew me… they would have no clue that she is anyone other than one of the Wives. They had no clue that she was involved in SOMETHING. (ok, well maybe if they happened to make it to the front gate show, but really, as a booth worker, I was never able to do that.
People who work the food court, people who sell clothing, people who work the booths… do not go to the entertainment meeting in the morning. They have NO concept of what is going on in that world. How do I know? I have been at this faire for 10 years, and for the first 9, I never knew anything like that. You all know me.. I am not shy… I am usually involved in the goings on at faire… and yet.. I was unfortunately oblivious
How do we get everyone involved? We can’t have a faire wide meeting.. logistically that would be impossible. Many of the Entertainment people… have never seen the morning newsletter, and most of the non entertainment know what is going on otherwise.

How do we become one big cohesive group? I do not mean, one big cohesive group who is all caring about entertainment… because as we just realized.. that is one part of it. But how do we get EVERYONE involved in the entire faire.. as a unit… other than just their own little slice of the pie? MANY of the people who are going to respond to this… are in entertainment… try to think of things outside of your world. I am looking for suggestions… that might be embraced. I am not looking for slamming of any particular group. And to be honest… I am looking for suggestions that might be used by the powers that be.. Northern, Southern.. ANY faire… I will be cross posting this in a few tribes... to get different opinions and points of view

I am new to this tribe, and I thought I'd post an introduction and a question to start things off here.

First off, I'm Ayperi, and I'm a bellydancer in Madison, WI. I'm the contact person and manager for the act "Weno Gypsies," which is a Middle Eastern dance, music, history, fire dance, fantasy, and comedy act.

We performed at the Bristol Renaissance Faire (Kenosha, WI) last summer, the Camelot Medeval Festival (WI) in the fall, and the Janesville Renaissance Faire (WI) this spring. We are very happy and excited to be taking our act to Bristol again this year, but this year, rather than doing stage performances, like we have been for the past three faires, we were asked to do street performances.

Does any one have any advice for how to convert a stage act to the street? Any advice for street performers as to how to keep one's energy up while performing so much?

Thanks!!!
- Ayperi

For any of you wonderful people who knew Jim Huitt at NCRF, our dear friend was taken far to early from us. For almost 4 years Jim fought the big C with all his might. On March 11, at home surrounded by his wife and family, he peacefully passed on to Summerland. We will miss his love, light and happy, free spirit. Its a deep, hard hitting loss for me and our faire family.
Jim and I met when we both started working faire 12 years ago, first , hawking Leather Roses at Blackpoint ( we had so much fun!! ) and then finally settling in with the great family at Oudeman Art Glass. We've been close friends ever since! Jim LOVED the faire and spent hours helping Miguel, our Captain, build the booth, then spent every weekend at the booth, then spent hours helping tear it down. We will miss him more than words can say. I know many people at faire knew him, or knew of him, so please come by the booth, Oudeman Art Glass, any time during faire this year and tell us your stories of Jim.
The first weekend, we will be having some sort of party in his honor, those details to come.
Yesterday, we had a private party with his family and friends to honor his life! The tequila flowed, tye-die was everywhere and our love for him filled every inch of the space. WE WILL MISS YOU BIG JIM!
Brightest Blessings to all who read this, thank you for your time.
Dear Guildmasters, Directors, Performers,

As you have been aware, the fate of our Northern Faire has been uncertain. I am sad to announce that we are, indeed, closing the Northern Renaissance Pleasure Faire. Below is a letter from our management detailing the situation. Please know that Southern Faire will go on as planned, and that I am continuing as Entertainment Director. I thank everyone involved in creating our entertainment. You can be proud of the fine job you have done and proud of the effort you exerted to make this Faire a success. The memories of Northern Faire, including the times we shared, certainly will live on in my heart. I am looking forward to our next meeting. I apologize for the lack of a complete e-mail list. Please forward this message to all concerned parties.

Dear Faire Family,

As you are aware, we have been fighting a losing battle over the last few years with attendance and loss of income with the Northern Renaissance Pleasure Faire. We have had a steady decline in attendance since 1991 (with the exception of 1994, our first year of "Farewell to Black Point").

There is no one factor that we can isolate which has contributed to the failing of the show. The decline began during the Patterson's administration and has continued through a series of General Managers who have been unable to stop th e hemorrhaging of revenues at this event.

No ad campaign nor marketing schedule, including Phyllis Patterson's legendary marketing skills, was able to deter the decline. Our attendance failed long before we moved from our home in Blackpoint and has suffered greatly while we tried to find a permanent home.

Since 1994 we have looked at over 200 sites and have spent over $500,000 in an attempt to find a home for our Faire. Not only has a property been impossible to find, the one exception (American Canyon) proved too costly to make workable and the California environment regulations work against any sincere efforts to create a business which by all accounts, "lays lightly on the soil".

The Northern Faire has lost $900,061 in revenues during the years 1999-2003. Our attendance has declined 62% since 1991. The losses incurred by the Northern Faire have placed a continual drain on our Southern, Chicago and New York Faires, which are healthy shows and consistently create a profit. It is unfair for these healthy shows to bear the burden on Northern's losses.

It, therefore, is which great sadness that we announce that we are closing the Northern Renaissance Pleasure Faire.

We must ask that you remove all of your personal possessions from the site by November 2nd, 2003.

As performers and entertainers the show has rested on your shoulders for many, many seasons. Please know that this failure does not reflect upon the amazing grace that you have given the show. We are all so appreciative of the energy and level of entertainment that you have contributed.

The show sparkled brightly this season and it is bittersweet that even though we have never looked or perform ed better, this has become our final Huzzah. We thank all of you for your continued support through all these past years. For as long as the show lives in our memories, it shall never fade away.

-- The staff and management of the Northern Renaissance Pleasure Faire and Renaissance Entertainment Corporation.

This music video is for a band I have been working with for about a year and they are called ' The Domino Effect '. Their Song ' Sympathies and Condolences ' is what I was asked to produce. I need a flexible cast and crew that are willing to give up a few weekends to help out. I am going to most likely be filming in San Jose for most of it.

I need People. People willing to dress up in their Ren Faire attire and would be willing to have a war. I need about 5 people with two swords. And I am hoping that you are willing to help Teach a bit of sword Fighting to two of the band Members because they want to pop up randomly through out the music video. And I do Very much hope for people to supervise. I will have the band members most likely green screened into the shot so we can watch them and make sure that they don't kill each other.

I need People who are willing to dress up in regal attire, and walk through a garden. Very simple, Very fun and a pretty Place I plan to film at. Just contact me if you are willing to help out.

Touring the Tower

A tour group stopped at the Tower of London, and were given the chance to try out some of the ancient armour. Two men - one from Prague and another from Athens took up the opportunity. One donned a slightly damaged suit of plate armor and the other chain-mail, while the rest of the group crowded around. But in the full suits, the onlookers couldn't tell one from the other. "Is that the Czech wearing the plate armour?" asked one tourist. "No," replied another, "The Greek has the broken plate, and the Czech is in the mail."

Roman Rollers

Back in the days of the Roman Empire, the famous Emperor Nero instituted a new game. The players would take those little disks you set your glass on in order to protect the furniture, and see who could get the most distance rolling them across the floor. They were the first roller coasters. Back in those days, the disks were made of iron, and they would bet on whose disk would roll the farthest. They called them ferrous wheels.

The Angry King

Once, long ago, a king summoned all his provincial rulers to his castle. He was in a rather belligerent mood, and wanted to scare them into giving him extra taxes. Unknown to him, they met in secret on the way, and decided that they should agree to pay the extra, but they would at first pretend to refuse, so they could try to bargain down the actual amount extra they would have to pay.

They arrived at the king's castle, and gathered in the audience chamber. The king made his demands, and as agreed, they started to refuse. Unfortunately, they hadn't realized just how belligerent the king's mood was: as soon as they started to refuse, he got angry, and ordered his guards to kill them on the spot.

More than half of them were slain before they even realized what was happening, and the others had to do some very quick groveling to survive. After everything had settled down, those who remained explained to the king their plan, and the king was filled with remorse for his hasty actions.

The moral of the story?
- Don't hatchet your counts before they chicken.

The King's Pizza

One day (just before Christmas, probably), Good King Wenceslas decided that he was fed up with the food at the palace, so he phoned up his local Italian restaurant for a takeaway pizza. "Certainly, your Majesty" says the Manager, "Would you like your usual"? "Yes please," replied the King, "same as always - deep pan, crisp and even"

Happy April Fools Day!

I've been doing Fezziwigs at Dickens Fair since 2000 (and '96) and was in Pryanksters and Seadogs at small faires and Black Point before that. Acting is fun, however, now I'm looking for a boothie who would be interested in either selling (or taking on consignment) Diamond Willow walking sticks that I recently found a source for.
So you can see what they look like, I posted one in my photos section.

Hello faire folk,
I am looking for faire jokes, stories, songs, parodies and variations that we might not sing in front of the crowds. I am looking for those song verses that we only sing at the end of day on those last weekends were we wont get in trouble for it.

If it is a random verse for drunken sailor you made up on the fly, Great! Does if have the bellman getting hit by a bus, cool. Even better. If it is dirty, talking about someone, something faire related or not I would love to know it. Want to make something new, now is the time. (and if anyone has other versions of the opening and closing parade song I would really love to know them)

Know a good or bad joke faire related but not (i.e. how many puritans does it take to screw in a light bulb…) I want to know it. Or want to make up a bunch of bad ren faire jokes. Now is your chance.

Ever tell the young faire brats stories of the night life (which may or may not be true), or of the privy monster, or the dragon in the maze. I want to know it.

Basiclly all those little things we say, sing, talk about and put on pins that only we as faire people really understand. I would like to know and I think others would be interested too. So message me or just reply here.

Why? I am taking a folklore class at CSU Sacramento and will be writing a paper about the folklore we have. Some who did the Casa Faire this year may remember the pink surveys I passed out and thank you greatly to those that responded. I would like to write down some of the things we say, do, sing and joke about that haven’t been written yet. I would like others to understand who we are and why we spend so much time and money and energy and life on faire. So if you would please help me out for class if for no other reason that would be wonderful.

And please don’t worry I am faire brat of the days of Blackpoint I would never write or do anything to hurt faire or who we are. This is strictly an academic adventure for my teacher and many things will be edited in the final drafts.

Thank you
Sarah

And yes this has been cross posted to many faire type tribes for maximum reply possibilities. And if you make up something new please claim it as your own and I will credit your work.

This information was sent by a friend. I thought it was something
that needed to be passed around.

St. Gyles trailer, with all of their props has been stolen. Please
share this information with anyone in our world you think of. Maybe
someone can catch a `fire sale' and let the rest of us know, so we
can recover at least some of what they've lost.

The sad thing is that they've recently replaced a pavilion or
two...Panther Pavilions run about $2,500. They also had some older
ones, about 4 total, so that's about $10k worth of props, in addition
to everything else...the rugs, ewers, platters, trunks, etc.

The trailer, license plate number 4EA3550, was in Hayward, parked on
the curb outside a guildmember's home. It was a 16' long, by 6' wide
by 7' tall, white, no-name cargo trailer. It was stolen some time
Sunday night.

This event is becoming the ultimate destination as Re-enactment Soldiers from all over the Nation are coming to attend and participate in this annual spectacular event.......

Persons who consider themselves Military oriented should heavily consider attending this Workshop in order to knock the dust off their boots and prepare for the up coming season....

With a literal City of period pavilions and tents, sutlers, cooks, vendors, musicians--- This event is quickly becoming the best opportunity for the Renaissance Faire Society (in general) to participate in a great educational and yet highly entertaining event.

Please contact me with any Questions @ Halcyoninc@aol.com for more information............. or go to you can find the website here www.renaissancesoldier.com
I've found two version online from people who sell them, one was a phygian cap with the bend already made, my crew calls them the shark tailed hats mainly because one of the colors was grey. The only is felt but is limited in size and doesn't bend at all.. is completely a gnome looking hat
As for crook earred hats the drawings I've found make it look like a coconut with ear flaps
Also my crew is looking for a source for someone who makes tams and larger sizes on the hats the Irish at Southern wear (I lovingly refer to them as the dutch cocoa pimp hat)

As Many of you know, David Springhorn and his family have lost their house and worldly possessions to the Fallbrook Fire. They are all fine and living with Marguerite's mother for now. The good news is the insurance will buy them a new home-- there will just be nothing to put in it. So go to the tribe above and see what you can do to make a difference. We are a devoted and loving sort and I think if we all band together we can make a difference. Also any monetary donation will be helpful. If everyone gives five bucks we may be able to get then some household necessities. I say we should even set up a gift registry for them at Target or Something.

Fires are serious business people. Imagine having to leave home all over again. You have nothing but the clothes on your back and whatever you got to take from your parents house. I would not want to be there again. Plus they have two boys.

Should you wish to donate money to help David Marguerite and the family, we are able to do so now. The not for profit status is a process that takes a while, so in the meantime I have set up a trust account under Davids name.

To donate: Send a check to 925 Lakeville street suite 129 Petaluma CA 94952 Care of Kathy Kingman

Make checks out to Kathy Kingman T/F David Springhorn-- it is very important to have both names AND the T/F are on the check or I will not be able to deposit into the account.

Any cards or letters may be sent to me as well. Marguerite says they have No place to keep anything at this time, the only real mailing address is her work address. I will send any letters or mail to her when she gives me word.

How does the Trust work?
A trust fund is set up by one person for another who is either too young or unavailable in some way to do it themselves. In order to set up the fund, the first person uses their social security number to set up the structure of the account. Then a signature card is sent to the person who the account benefits. David and Marguerite are fully aware of the account and are very grateful for any help they receive. As promised, I will have a Paypal account set up by tomorrow for anyone who would like to donate via credit/bank card.

Bank of America also has the ability to accept transfers from other banks. I do not have the information on how to do that. You will need to speak with your bank.

know there were some friendly type people out there. There is a cover
ablt to do something about the cover charge. Anyway, even if you

Begging the moderator's indulgence, I wanted to tell you guys about my carrying bag for rapier/long weapon fencers. I've been fencing rapier, and other weapons for years--this is the bag I wished I'd been able to get all along, and since no one was making it, I went ahead and had it manufactured. It's a "triangle" style shoulder bag that's biog enough and strong enough to carry rapiers and just about as much equipment as you could want to throw in. It;s over FIVE FEET long, and can be adjusted for shorter weapons (the top of the bag had a velcro closure in case you really need to pack something evel longer--a spear, a quando, maybe your favorite broom), the back is padded, the bottom is reinforced, there are roomy outside pockets big enough for a wet fencing jacket... I think it's really a cool poduct at a good price, and I'm trying to reach more rapier fencers. Come check it out:
I 'm a mehndi vendor here in New England and
want to get a more sturdy tent than the one that I'm
working out of currently and I heard that there is
a pattern out there somewhere that you can use
to dress up and cover the boring white tops
to make them fit in and look more period ..

anyone have any idea where I could find this?

(I hope it's kosher to post this here. Saw a couple of other for-sale posts, so assuming it's allowable.)

Have an almost-but-not-quite-new (worn at one gig) Ravenswood Leather surcoat for sale. Similar to the coat in the top two photos here:

http://ravenswoodleather.com/Trenchcoats/ravensurcoat.html

The particular coat for sale has their "R-2 Sleeves" (removable two-part) and antique brass finish button closures. Unique to this one, not normally offered on their web site, are hip pockets and a distinctive olive color.

Size is large. It's almost too roomy on my 6 foot, 165# frame...ideally it would fit someone of similar or slightly taller height, and moderately heavier with an athletic build (perhaps up to 200#) if you want to be able to fasten the buttons (or a bit of belly is okay if you leave the front open).

With the unique additions and after sales tax, this cost over $800 new. It was worn to only one faire, where friends quickly dubbed it "The Jacket of Hawtness." It's gorgeous and of course smells wonderful. TEN POUNDS of leather! Unfortunately paying bills takes precedence over "hawtness," so the jacket will have to go.

Before I go dealing with the mouth-breathers on eBay, I'd rather offer it up here if possible. Hoping to get $500 or best reasonable offer, which would include postage anywhere in the U.S. I have a PayPal account if that helps.

Some photos of the jacket:
