Valhalla - who's going?

I, of course, mean the Renaissance Faire, and not anything mythological... :-)

And, for those going, who's staying the week? I'm planning on it, but I have modern-day needs for electricity, so I'll be getting a hotel room, rather than camping. More expensive, but ultimately worth it.

Update on my ride in the Tour De`Cure

Here is an update on my ride. With my online donations and what cash donations We (meaning all of you and myself) Raised just over $1,000. I just wanted to say thank you to you all.

I did much, much, better then I figured I would. It was a nice day for a ride, it was cool and overcast. This helped me greatly, since I don’t do well in the heat. Out of all of us riding in the 50 miler, I finished very high. I am not one for patting myself on the back. But, after 16 years of not riding and to do this well was a shock to me. I was just hoping to finish. But, it all came back to me and it was like I never left.

Thanks again.

Don't post an answer to a lying hateful post~ it will only keep the post alive and get more people to read it and contribute to the mess.

I agree that reporting to a moderator is a good idea, as is requesting a look at the possibility of a TOS violation, but a troublemaker will hust create another sockpuppet to spread dirt.

Ignoring the post until it moves down and dies might be a better way to deal.

I have an opportunity to go out for the run of Pittsburgh Faire, but I'd like to know about the faire environment out there before agreeing to spend that long away from home. What's it like, in your experience? How are the patrons and actors? Is there camping? After hours fun? Is everyone crazy and prude?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Music Video help?

I have a Video Final and I need a cast and crew. I am doing a music video for my final. This music video is for a band I have been working with for about a year and they are called ' The Domino Effect '. Their Song ' Sympathies and Condolences ' is what I was asked to produce. I need a flexible cast and crew that are willing to give up a few weekends to help out. I am going to most likely be filming in San Jose for most of it. I will know for certain when i get a call back from the dance studios I asked to film at.

If you would care to donate, Help out, Be in this video, Keep me sane, or teach PLEASE CONTACT ME ON TRIBE!!!!

I need People. People willing to dress up in their Ren Faire attire and would be willing to have a war. I need about 5 people with two swords. And I am hoping that you are willing to help Teach a bit of sword Fighting to two of the band Members because they want to pop up randomly through out the music video. And I do Very much hope for people to supervise. I will have the band members most likely green screened into the shot so we can watch them and make sure that they don't kill each other.

I need People who are willing to dress up in regal attire, and walk through a garden. Very simple, Very fun and a pretty Place I plan to film at. Just contact me if you are willing to help out.

Now my favorite part. I need DANCERS!!! We are having a Dance scene where we have a ' ballroom ' filled with people dancing the Congress Of Vienna. Of course we are in need of people dressing up in Victorian attire. And I need people willing to teach a group how to Dance Congress!!! So Fezziwigger's are in High demand. I need a good chunk of people. I want at least 15 couples in this scene so I do hope at least 10 people who know Congress forwards and Backwards can come.

I also would like help with Camera and set work. If you can do anything involving Camera work, Audio, Lighting and semi light carpentry work, then PLEASE TALK TO ME!!!

I will have dates up soon. Hopefully in the next 5 weekends I will be filming. so PLEASE help out. I would really much appreciate it.

Dear Guildmasters, Directors, Performers,

As you have been aware, the fate of our Northern Faire has been uncertain. I am sad to announce that we are, indeed, closing the Northern Renaissance Pleasure Faire. Below is a letter from our management detailing the situation. Please know that Southern Faire will go on as planned, and that I am continuing as Entertainment Director. I thank everyone involved in creating our entertainment. You can be proud of the fine job you have done and proud of the effort you exerted to make this Faire a success. The memories of Northern Faire, including the times we shared, certainly will live on in my heart. I am looking forward to our next meeting. I apologize for the lack of a complete e-mail list. Please forward this message to all concerned parties.
Dear Faire Family,

As you are aware, we have been fighting a losing battle over the last few years with attendance and loss of income with the Northern Renaissance Pleasure Faire. We have had a steady decline in attendance since 1991 (with the exception of 1994, our first year of "Farewell to Black Point").

There is no one factor that we can isolate which has contributed to the failing of the show. The decline began during the Patterson's administration and has continued through a series of General Managers who have been unable to stop th e hemorrhaging of revenues at this event.

No ad campaign nor marketing schedule, including Phyllis Patterson's legendary marketing skills, was able to deter the decline. Our attendance failed long before we moved from our home in Blackpoint and has suffered greatly while we tried to find a permanent home.

Since 1994 we have looked at over 200 sites and have spent over $500,000 in an attempt to find a home for our Faire. Not only has a property been impossible to find, the one exception (American Canyon) proved too costly to make workable and the California environment regulations work against any sincere efforts to create a business which by all accounts, "lays lightly on the soil".

The Northern Faire has lost $900,061 in revenues during the years 1999-2003. Our attendance has declined 62% since 1991. The losses incurred by the Northern Faire have placed a continual drain on our Southern, Chicago and New York Faires, which are healthy shows and consistently create a profit. It is unfair for these healthy shows to bear the burden on Northern's losses.

It, therefore, is which great sadness that we announce that we are closing the Northern Renaissance Pleasure Faire.

We must ask that you remove all of your personal possessions from the site by November 2nd, 2003.

As performers and entertainers the show has rested on your shoulders for many, many seasons. Please know that this failure does not reflect upon the amazing grace that you have given the show. We are all so appreciative of the energy and level of entertainment that you have contributed.

The show sparkled brightly this season and it is bittersweet that even though we have never looked or perform ed better, this has become our final Huzzah. We thank all of you for your continued support through all these past years. For as long as the show lives in our memories, it shall never fade away.
Off Topic – Honouring The Day

Touring the Tower

A tour group stopped at the Tower of London, and were given the chance to try out some of the ancient armour. Two men - one from Prague and another from Athens took up the opportunity. One donned a slightly damaged suit of plate armor and the other chain-mail, while the rest of the group crowded around. But in the full suits, the onlookers couldn't tell one from the other. "Is that the Czech wearing the plate armour?" asked one tourist. "No," replied another, "The Greek has the broken plate, and the Czech is in the mail."

Roman Rollers

Back in the days of the Roman Empire, the famous Emperor Nero instituted a new game. The players would take those little disks you set your glass on in order to protect the furniture, and see who could get the most distance rolling them across the floor. They were the first roller coasters. Back in those days, the disks were made of iron, and they would bet on whose disk would roll the farthest. They called them ferrous wheels.

The Angry King

Once, long ago, a king summoned all his provincial rulers to his castle. He was in a rather belligerent mood, and wanted to scare them into giving him extra taxes. Unknown to him, they met in secret on the way, and decided that they should agree to pay the extra, but they would at first pretend to refuse, so they could try to bargain down the actual amount extra they would have to pay.

They arrived at the king's castle, and gathered in the audience chamber. The king made his demands, and as agreed, they started to refuse. Unfortunately, they hadn't realized just how belligerent the king's mood was: as soon as they started to refuse, he got angry, and ordered his guards to kill them on the spot.

More than half of them were slain before they even realized what was happening, and the others had to do some very quick groveling to survive. After everything had settled down, those who remained explained to the king their plan, and the king was filled with remorse for his hasty actions.

The moral of the story?
- Don't hatchet your counts before they chicken.

The King's Pizza

One day (just before Christmas, probably), Good King Wenceslas decided that he was fed up with the food at the palace, so he phoned up his local Italian restaurant for a takeaway pizza. "Certainly, your Majesty" says the Manager, "Would you like your usual"? "Yes please," replied the King, "same as always - deep pan, crisp and even"

Happy April Fools Day!

The Loss of our Friend Big420 Jim

Greetings all.
For any of you wonderful people who knew Jim Huitt at NCRF, our dear friend was taken far to early from us. For almost 4 years Jim fought the big C with all his might. On March 11, at home surrounded by his wife and family, he peacefully passed on to Summerland. We will miss his love, light and happy, free spirit. Its a deep, hard hitting loss for me and our faire family.
Jim and I met when we both started working faire 12 years ago, first , hawking Leather Roses at Blackpoint ( we had so much fun!! ) and then finally settling in with the great family at Oudeman Art Glass. We've been close friends ever since! Jim LOVED the faire and spent hours helping Miguel, our Captain, build the booth, then spent every weekend at the booth, then spent hours helping tear it down. We will miss him more than words can say. I know many people at faire knew him, or knew of him, so please come by the booth, Oudeman Art Glass, any time during faire this year and tell us your stories of Jim.
The first weekend, we will be having some sort of party in his honor, those details to come.
Yesterday, we had a private party with his family and friends to honor his life! The tequila flowed, tye-die was everywhere and our love for him filled every inch of the space. WE WILL MISS YOU BIG JIM!

Brightest Blessings to all who read this, thank you for your time.
peace ,love and light~ Andrea ( aka- the Autumn Goddess)

Looking for Boothie to sell my walking sticks

Hi,

I've been doing Fezziwigs at Dickens Fair since 2000 (and '96) and was in Pryanksters and Seadogs at small faires and Black Point before that. Acting is fun, however, now I'm looking for a boothie who would be interested in either selling (or taking on consignment) Diamond Willow walking sticks that I recently found a source for.
So you can see what they look like, I posted one in my photos section.
http://people.tribe.net/2d841e20-700d-46c6-a55d-be94e26a9e94/photos
They are 50 inches tall and beautifully polished.
Please let me know if you or someone you know would be interested in one of these.

Looking for Songs, variations, jokes and parodies

Hello faire folk,
I am looking for faire jokes, stories, songs, parodies and variations that we might not sing in front of the crowds. I am looking for those song verses that we only sing at the end of day on those last weekends were we wont get in trouble for it.

If it is a random verse for drunken sailor you made up on the fly, Great! Does if have the bellman getting hit by a bus, cool. Even better. If it is dirty, talking about someone, something faire related or not I would love to know it. Want to make something new, now is the time. (and if anyone has other versions of the opening and closing parade song I would really love to know them)

Know a good or bad joke faire related but not (i.e. how many puritans does it take to screw in a light bulb…) I want to know it. Or want to make up a bunch of bad ren faire jokes. Now is your chance.

Ever tell the young faire brats stories of the night life (which may or may not be true), or of the privy monster, or the dragon in the maze. I want to know it.

Basiclly all those little things we say, sing, talk about and put on pins that only we as faire people really understand. I would like to know and I think others would be interested too. So message me or just reply here.

Why? I am taking a folklore class at CSU Sacramento and will be writing a paper about the folklore we have. Some who did the Casa Faire this year may remember the pink surveys I passed out and thank you greatly to those that responded. I would like to write down some of the things we say, do, sing and joke about that haven’t been written yet. I would like others to understand who we are and why we spend so much time and money and energy and life on faire. So if you would please help me out for class if for no other reason that would be wonderful.

And please don’t worry I am faire brat of the days of Blackpoint I would never write or do anything to hurt faire or who we are. This is strictly an academic adventure for my teacher and many things will be edited in the final drafts.

Thank you
Sarah

And yes this has been cross posted to many faire type tribes for maximum reply possibilities. And if you make up something new please claim it as your own and I will credit your work.

Trailer Stolen

I know that this is a cross post, but I think that it is worth posting.. If you know anything please send me a message.

Thank You
Angie McPherson
Clan Galbraith
Pendragon Costumes

This information was sent by a friend. I thought it was something
that needed to be passed around.

St. Gyles trailer, with all of their props has been stolen. Please
share this information with anyone in our world you think of. Maybe
someone can catch a `fire sale' and let the rest of us know, so we
can recover at least some of what they've lost.

The sad thing is that they've recently replaced a pavilion or
two...Panther Pavilions run about $2,500. They also had some older
ones, about 4 total, so that's about $10k worth of props, in addition
to everything else...the rugs, ewers, platters, trunks, etc.

The trailer, license plate number 4EA3550, was in Hayward, parked on
the curb outside a guildmember's home. It was a 16' long, by 6' wide
by 7' tall, white, no-name cargo trailer. It was stolen some time
Sunday night.

St. Brides-- Army of Dalkieth Invites all those interested in the real living history of the Renaissance time period to attend the premier Northern California Event.......

Action in the Low Countries------ The School of the Renaissance Soldier. April 4-6th
At Gibson Ranch State Park in Sacramento CA

This event last year had a battle contingent of 141 persons.....

We are expecting this number to double this year.......

At What event can you experience a Renaissance style Battle with over 200 soldier wielding pike----- holding off 30 cavalry--- Black powder matchlocks blazing and Cannons booming?

This event is becoming the ultimate destination as Re-enactment Soldiers from all over the Nation are coming to attend and participate in this annual spectacular event.......

Persons who consider themselves Military oriented should heavily consider attending this Workshop in order to knock the dust off their boots and prepare for the up coming season....

With a literal City of period pavilions and tents, sutlers, cooks, vendors, musicians--- This event is quickly becoming the best opportunity for the Renaissance Faire Society (in general) to participate in a great educational and yet highly entertaining event.

I'm in the process of trying to find patterns or someone who is able to make two kinds of hats common throughout but specfically for 16th Century. One is a phrygian cap and the other is called a crooked eared cap.

I've found two version online from people who sell them, one was a phygian cap with the bend already made, my crew calls them the shark tailed hats mainly because one of the colors was grey. The only is felt but is limited in size and doesn't bend at all.. is completely a gnome looking hat

As for crook earred hats the drawings I've found make it look like a coconut with ear flaps

Also my crew is looking for a source for someone who makes tams and larger sizes on the hats the Irish at Southern wear (I lovingly refer to them as the dutch cocoa pimp hat)

The other I'm doing research on O'Neills and their enemeis, right now focusing on the O'Donnells. Is there anyone who knows more on that. I am a part of Tuatha Ui Niall so I have a lot of the O'Niells side of things, just not her enemies. While I've read a number of things I'd like to correspond with someone more knowledgable of my subject.

New News from David Springhorn and Family

http://tribes.tribe.net/fairefrienddisasterrelief

As Many of you know, David Springhorn and his family have lost their house and worldly possessions to the Fallbrook Fire. They are all fine and living with Marguerite's mother for now. The good news is the insurance will buy them a new home-- there will just be nothing to put in it. So go to the tribe above and see what you can do to make a difference. We are a devoted and loving sort and I think if we all band together we can make a difference. Also any monetary donation will be helpful. Any one who donates five dollars or more will be thanked by name on the Faire Friends California Disaster relief website-unless otherwise specified. If everyone gives five bucks we may be able to get then some household necessities. I say we should even set up a gift registry for them at Target or Something.

Fires are serious business people. Imagine having to leave home all over again. You have nothing but the clothes on your back and whatever you got to take from your parents house. I would not want to be there again. Plus they have two boys.

Should you wish to donate money to help David Marguerite and the family, we are able to do so now. The not for profit status is a process that takes a while, so in the meantime I have set up a trust account under Davids name.

To donate: Send a check to 925 Lakeville street suite 129 Petaluma CA 94952 Care of Kathy Kingman

Make checks out to Kathy Kingman T/F David Springhorn-- it is very important to have both names AND the T/F are on the check or I will not be able to deposit into the account.

Any cards or letters may be sent to me as well. Marguerite says they have No place to keep anything at this time, the only real mailing address is her work address. I will send any letters or mail to her when she gives me word.

How does the Trust work?
A trust fund is set up by one person for another who is either too young or unavailable in some way to do it themselves. In order to set up the fund, the first person uses their social security number to set up the structure of the account. Then a signature card is sent to the person who the account benefits. David and Marguerite are fully aware of the account and are very grateful for any help they receive. As promised, I will have a Paypal account set up by tomorrow for anyone who would like to donate via credit/bank card.

Bank of America also has the ability to accept transfers from other banks. I do not have the information on how to do that. You will need to speak with your bank.

So, I've finally got the courage to post this. My name is Robin, and I am a Cuthie. I'm also the head kid wrangler, and the caligrapher for the Children's Knighting at faire. I am going to make my first really truly stand-up comedy debut on the stage of the Hollywood
Improv. I don't know how much you know about stand-up, but this is
like telling an athelete that their first official meet is at the
Olympics. I don't know the exact date yet, but it will be a Sunday
afternoon(THANK GOD!!!!!!!! Smaller audiences)I would like to get as
many people from faire in the audience as possible. At least I would
know there were some friendly type people out there. There is a cover
charge, and a 2 drink minimum, but if enough people commit, I might be
ablt to do something about the cover charge. Anyway, even if you
can't make it, keep your fingers, toes, and eyes crossed (except when
you're driving), because I can use all the help I can get....I am
sooooo nervous! Thanks, Robin

Rather than have a new post for every faire, by every photographer, I'm declaring this thread to be the official place to post your notice of newly (and even oldly) posted pictures. Use a format that contains the URL and if it's an update, which faire you're updating.

So, to start things off:

My pictures from the Folsom Ren Faire are now up at: http://picasaweb.google.com/tsgeisel/FolsomRenFaire07

The site (http://picasaweb.google.com/tsgeisel ) also contains pictures from other Faire and non-Faire events. Feel free to look at those, too.

Tips for Titties and RESCU Rally

It's that time again when the night ale stand will gather all our tips and donate them to those doing the Breast Cancer Walk. We ALL love the breast (ours, our friends, our lovers, our neighbors, everyone's!), so lets dig out those extra coins and paper things and bring them along to the ale stand. Last year, we collected over $700 to donate.

And while you're in a giving mood, the RESCU Rally is also that night. So dig doubly deep to help your fellow Ren Faire performers and crew and crafters. =)

A shoulder bag for rapier fencers

Begging the moderator's indulgence, I wanted to tell you guys about my carrying bag for rapier/long weapon fencers. I've been fencing rapier, and other weapons for years--this is the bag I wished I'd been able to get all along, and since no one was making it, I went ahead and had it manufactured. It's a "triangle" style shoulder bag that's biog enough and strong enough to carry rapiers and just about as much equipment as you could want to throw in. It;s over FIVE FEET long, and can be adjusted for shorter weapons (the top of the bag had a velcro closure in case you really need to pack something evel longer--a spear, a quando, maybe your favorite broom), the back is padded, the bottom is reinforced, there are roomy outside pockets big enough for a wet fencing jacket... I think it's really a cool poduct at a good price, and I'm trying to reach more rapier fencers. Come check it out:

Thanks for your time,
Jeff

Good Day All!

I 'm a mehndi vendor here in New England and
want to get a more sturdy tent than the one that I'm
working out of currently and I heard that there is
a pattern out there somewhere that you can use
to dress up and cover the boring white tops
to make them fit in and look more period ..

anyone have any idea where I could find this?
Many Thanks!

Ravenswood Leather Surcoat (Size Large) For Sale

(I hope it's kosher to post this here. Saw a couple of other for-sale posts, so assuming it's allowable.)

Have an almost-but-not-quite-new (worn at one gig) Ravenswood Leather surcoat for sale. Similar to the coat in the top two photos here:

http://ravenswoodleather.com/Trenchcoats/ravensurcoat.html

The particular coat for sale has their "R-2 Sleeves" (removable two-part) and antique brass finish button closures. Unique to this one, not normally offered on their web site, are hip pockets and a distinctive olive color.

Size is large. It's almost too roomy on my 6 foot, 165# frame...ideally it would fit someone of similar or slightly taller height, and moderately heavier with an athletic build (perhaps up to 200#) if you want to be able to fasten the buttons (or a bit of belly is okay if you leave the front open).

With the unique additions and after sales tax, this cost over $800 new. It was worn to only one faire, where friends quickly dubbed it "The Jacket of Hawtness." It's gorgeous and of course smells wonderful. TEN POUNDS of leather! Unfortunately paying bills takes precedence over "hawtness," so the jacket will have to go.

Before I go dealing with the mouth-breathers on eBay, I'd rather offer it up here if possible. Hoping to get $500 or best reasonable offer, which would include postage anywhere in the U.S. I have a PayPal account if that helps.

Some photos of the jacket:
chase williams is looking for actors, individuals who can dress like pioneer folks and have picnics... there may be some money
pm chase at daywilliams @ earthlink.net

this event is timegames (phyllis patterson) and it's california history done at olimpali park http://www.timegames.org/

pretty nifty event - although it does conflict with casa. but those not doing casa and are interested should contact chase immediately - they're coming up close to opening and need people who can portray historical figures / pioneers and early californians during the gold rush era on up to 1890s i think....

Hi girls and boys!

The Merry Wives of Windsor are performing at the famous Derby Club in Hollywood! At last! The long awaited LA gig everyone has been asking for! We won't be in our bodices but it's going to be a great show and we can't wait!

The show is Sept 5th (we know... a Weds but if enough people show up there is a possibility for better dates!) and starts at 8pm. The lovely and talented Christiane Cargill-Kinney is opening the Irish/folk part of the show. The Wives will be going on about 8:45pm but there will be music till very late!

You can get discount tickets through our website at www.mwow.net/tickets/ or just ask your friendly neighborhood Merry Wife! The ticket is good for a WHOLE NIGHT at the derby so come see a bunch of good bands at this historical LA landmark!

:) Kimi

Sterling Festival, NY

I just got back from Sterling Festival - very nice perment site, friendly people, overall fun but...

No street troopes, ie no one interacting with the crowd except in stage shows. And for everyone who complains about costume approval/enforcement, stop. Thank Molly, Sue and the rest of the crew at Casa and their counter parts at other faires. Why? Because after seeing a faire full of vendors and patrons who weren't wearing their garb correctly (for those who had any), I can tell you it looks really bad. To be fair, I don't think many of them, particularly the women, know how to wear their costume pieces correctly.

I'll go again next year, as Sterling is a major faire here but I'll miss still miss Casa.

What is the name of the group that does the belly dances at ren fairs? I remember some smaller groups at fairs, but I'm thinking of the biggest group, they all wear similar costumes in darker colors, and have at least one man perform with them. I have been going to ren fairs since the 80's with my family, and I especially remember them at Blackpoint every year. We would go watch them every time. My mom loves that group, and I want to take her to Casa this year if they are there. I never caught their name. (Shame on me!) They are such a wonderful act. I'll bet you all know exactly who I'm talking about. Do they perform at Casa? Do they have a tribe?

Help! I have no costume.

My dilemma is this: I have no costume and have to have one by the end of the weekend because I can't make it to any other NCRF workshop days for costume approval.

I'm going to buy a shirt and bodice at workshops this coming weekend, but I'd like to save some money by making my own skirt. My problem is that I haven't been to fair in nearly seven years and so I don't really have a good idea of what I should make.

Someone told me to use at least two layers, but I'm not sure how or whether it's necessary. Similarly I was told to make a circle skirt, but considering my limited time, a gathered skirt would be a little easier, right? I know how to draft a pattern and could do so with a little more guidance on what my result should be. My sewing skills are self-taught, so much of the terminology goes right over my head.

I'll take any suggestions.

SPORRAN WEARERS MAY NEED LICENCE

I found this on another forum I follow; File this under "whut da f**k!!"

SPORRAN WEARERS MAY NEED LICENCE

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/6234290.stm

The laws are designed to protect endangered species like otters, whose fur used to be favoured by sporran makers. The legislation applies to animals killed after 1994. Applicants must prove that the animal was killed lawfully before they will be able to get a licence. The conservation regulations were designed to close a number of loopholes and bring Scotland into line with other EU members. The law already applied to other vulnerable animals like badgers, deer, wildcats, hedgehogs, bats, lynx, moles, seals, whales, dolphins and porpoises. The regulations require anyone who owns any part of a protected animal to obtain a licence. The maximum penalties for breaking the law are a fine of £5,000 and six months in prison.

I have to quote one of the other forum members here:

"Personally, I'd not like to be the person in charge of telling some burly competitor in the highland games he must relinquish his sporran. Life's too short to spend that much of it in intensive care."

Fabric Yard Sale in San Bernadino

For anyone interested, while working today I ran across a yard sale that is running today (Friday) and tomorrow (Saturday) in San Bernardino, a few miles south of the Devore site.

It’s apparently a dressmaker who is moving and clearing out stuff.

There are 2 very sturdy looking industrial quality sewing machines she’s selling for $350 each, a serger, and an industrial embroidering machine which is going for $650, though I got the impression she’d negotiate. There are a lot very large piles of fabric. Mostly non-period stuff, but I think I saw some silks and linen in the piles. Sorry, I didn’t notice any brocades..

The address is:

2277 Portola St.,
San Bernardino, Ca.

Just thought I’d mention it, in case someone wanted to go look.

(It’d also help if you speak Spanish, but she had a translator there.)

Marque Siebenthal (Hoodstink, Pantalone, etc.) 7/30/52 - 7/9/7

"Indeedy-Doo". That's what he would say on stage when he suddenly had no words. "Indeedy doo". He used to brag about the magic of that phrase, saying things like "see? no one know you've gone up on your lines when you say that!" and to that we'd say, "Q, everyone knows you've gone up on your lines when you say that! That's what it means!" But he never believed us, or seemed to care and for 30 plus years, when ever he played my assistant Hoodstink in The Wizard Show and couldn't remember a line (and how is That possible?!) he would almost smugly toss in an "indeedy-doo" and proceed to trapse about the stage in that way only he could move waiting for someone to save him. We never did. What he was doing was always funnier.

I first met Marque (later just Q) in 1970 in my drama class at Hamilton High School. I had long hair but his was even longer and he could do this amazing mime trick of sewing his fingers together. No doubt about it, he was cool so when, come springtime, he mentioned that his mime troupe was going to perform at the Agoura Renaisannce Faire, I knew that my troupe had to perform there too. Except there was one small problem. I had no troupe. Ah, but we were young and details were the bane of the elderly; I gathered a group of my friends (among them William "Billy" Barrett and Jeffrey "Gluckson" Briar) and we formed a troupe. Not knowing anything about mime, we instead decided upon something much simpler, a 16th century recorder ensemble. But apparently recorder players don't get to stay over night (as Q explained it to us once we were there), mimes do. And so Billy, Jeffrey and I put on white face and, keeping the makeup on as if it were some kind of night pass, stayed over night. It worked. Q was officially proclaimed God.

In 73, Billy and I were walking through the Blackpoint site at night (we might have been flying on mushrooms, I really don't remember) and we ran into Marque, sitting on one of the hay bails facing the main stage, grinning. We walked up to him and asked him what he was doing. "Hatching out a scarecrow" was his reply. The next year, when he got the Cock and Feathers wizard show script, we were ready to admit to borrowing that moment from him, but it seems he might have been on even more mushrooms than we were.

When Jeffrey chose to do other things, Marque joined the show and made it his own. Suddenly Murkmouth had his own assistant, someone who seemed to crawl out from under the same rock and, having this character beside me, everything I said was suddenly funnier. When I would hit Jeffrey, the audience would gasp as if I was attacking an innocent child; but when I hit Marque, they roared.

I fell in love with him at the faire as a mime and was amazed that this same person was also playing Pantalone in "Salami Del Amore". To one day be able to join the cast as Lelio was such an amazing thrill for, not only was I part of a successful main stage show, I got to work with the likes of Billy Scudder, Judy Cory and Marque Siebenthal. Dancing with the Gods.

When we toured the country on a bus he made a point of peeing out the bus door in each state. When we got to lay out in center field at Dodger Stadium to watch the 4th of July fireworks, he turned to me and whispered gleefully, "I peed behind second base." His need to make his mark, to mark his territory was more than accepted, it was expected. "I got backstage." "Did you pee?" "Of course." It sounds so strange in this context but this is one of his many pluses, it really is.

He made me laugh. On stage. Whenever he wanted to. And he knew it. I would be crying in my wizard make-up trying to look anywhere other than directly into the chimplike gawky face of this man. And our audiences knew it too. They knew that this man owned me on stage and they delighted in the fact that, with one twitch, he could reduce me to a blubbering idiot.

I could write about how much I love this man from now until I die and I know I would still miss something I meant to say about him. My entire body aches and each breathe is strained. No more Q? Are you insane? Where do we find our peace, our sanity, our soul? I am pissed off at this man for leaving us this early and if and when I do get to see him again, rest assured I will beat the living crap out of him. In the meantime we hug each other, share some of the countless stories this wonderful man has inspired and if someone asks me what I feel about him, about life, about all of this, I will say

indeedy-doo.

Missing sword and a request for assistance in located it - x-post

This is from posts made on a group i belong to.
I am sending a shout out to everyone to keep a look out on e-bay, or any Faire's. As Jade was wrapping up at Southern faire this year, her beloved sword( whom her roommates purchased for her as a birthday Present) slipped out of her gig bag ad someone has picked it up during her frantic search. It's a Short Schulps Sword with a middled eastern flare to it. Black and green are it's colors with brass accents on the hilt and handle. If anyone has seen said item please contact My self or Jade at her_jadeness@yahoo.com.
My own addition to this was:
As an FYI in addition to Sherri’s statement – Jade has worked for Jon for more years than many have been doing faire – this blade was designed by Jon Schulps for Jade. See if we can get a picture to post so everyone is looking for this piece. If anyone you know or a friend of a friend thought this was the best ground score of their lives it will be recognized and it will not go well for anyone keeping it. Better to return it to Jade or any other blade smith on faire circuit for the gratitude and brownie points it will earn you. Just something to keep in mind – this is not a ground score to keep. Recognizable and well known. There are people associated with Schulps that would not be kind in retrieving the blade. Lets get the word out there and make Jade unbelievable happy in the process.

I *intended* this tribe for Renaissance Faire workers to talk about Ren Faire stuff. A kind of community for those involved in faires to discuss them.

Intentions and reality, however, rarely intersect neatly. At the time tribe (and this tribe) was created, the pirate phenomenon had not even surfaced on any kind of societal radar.

So, that said, yes, pictures of pirates, discussions of pirates, and faires dedicated to pirates are just fine *within the context of a Faire-type event*. Similarily, if someone were to create a Babylon 5 Faire (an idea I wholly support), discussions of that nature would be fine as well. I have no problems with Dickens discussions, either.

That said, don't be an ass. Keep non-faire related posts to a minimum, don't flame folks (and if you do, be *really, really* creative and entertaining), and just be mindful of the intent of *community* that I hoped for in both the creation and naming of this tribe.

I'll try to get on here more often to keep tabs, but thankfully this is more of a reminder to folks than a warning. Thanks for that. I have left all posts and threads completely untouched.

[Carpool to] Fair Oaks Faire

Good my lords and ladies,

I am but a humble wingless faerie hailing from the east bay, in search of a carpool to/from Fair Oaks either on Saturday or Sunday. Verily can I make myself appear at any and all points near BART.

(I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post carpool requests to--back in my day, in aught one [that's 2001 to you young-timers], all's we had was alt.fairs.renaissance. :)

Well met,
Les Reines Mal De Mer

I was at the Valhalla faire last weekend and what a small group of lovely pirate wenches handed me a dark pink handkerchief with the name Les Reines Mal De Mer on it with a picture of a pirate wench in the center. They didn't say anything else to me; just handed it to me, smiled and walked off... hmmm....

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone happens to know anything about them or have heard of them? I assume they are a guild, but I do not know how to find out about them. I've tried doing a search on tribe and I also tried googling them, but no luck.

If anyone could shed a little light on this, that would be great! I'm very curious to know who they were! Gosh, I wonder if it's my lot in life to continually be searching for different people! First the "giant" that I had my eye on, and now a group of pirate wenches! SHEESH!

Dragonslayers Festival!!!!

Hey all!
Dragonslayers Renaissance Festival is this Saturday, June 16th from 10am-6pm at Aptos Park (in Santa Cruz)!!!
We'll be doing another walkabout in Downtown Santa Cruz/Farmer's Market this Wednesday June 13th from 5pm-7pm to promote the Faire. Come on out and join us! We had a blast last time wandering the streets of Santa Cruz and the Farmer's Market in costume talking to folks about all the upcoming Faires! Especially Dragonslayers which is near and dear to my heart because it supports a wonderful organization-Dragonslayers, who use animal therapy to help disabled children and adults here in the Santa Cruz Mountains. If ya want to come out and play, let me know-I could still use a few more volunteers to help out at the festival. You can PM me here on tribe or e-mail me at enchantressal@yahoo.com. You can check out the webpage at www.dragonslayersfestival.org
Happy Faireing Everyone! Anastasia

BUT, - if you're still wanting to garner something new and big and white to live in (and aren't into aluminum and wheels) yet this Summer, contact me for both the yet-pre-raised prices AND my 10% off retail discount which those nice peeps down yonder in West Va. allow all canvas ordered through lil' ol' me. Go check out my listing for the dee-tails if you're interested!

Cheers and shake a leg to save what will prolly equal at least 20% if gotten into the system before the 31st!
